Stephen Chu

Colonel Stephen Chu is serving as a U.S Army Foreign Area Officer.

Colonel Chu received his commission as an Infantry Officer from Wheaton College, Illinois in 2005. He is a graduate of the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Airborne School, Ranger School, Jumpmaster School, Command and General Staff Officers Course, and Army War College. As a Foreign Area Officer with a focus on Europe, he completed Czech language training from the Foreign Service Institute and holds a Master of Arts in Russian and East European Studies from Indiana University, Indiana.

His previous Foreign Area Officer assignments include service as the Chief of the Office of Defense Cooperation in Ukraine, Lithuania and Armenia, and service at U.S. European Command J5, where he served as the Desk Officer for Ukraine and Russia.

His Infantry assignments include service as a Light Infantry Platoon Leader and Rifle Company XO in the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas, where he deployed to Iraq for 15 months as part of the Surge; Ranger Instructor at the 6th Ranger Training Battalion at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida; and Battalion Assistant S3 and Stryker Company Commander in the 2nd Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, where he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Colonel Chu’s awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal with 1 OLC, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal with 2 OLC, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with 2 OLC, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Army Achievement Medal with 1 OLC, the OIF and OEF Campaign Medals, the Senior Parachutist Badge, the Ranger Tab, and the Combat and Expert Infantryman Badges.

He is married to the former Christie Witcher of Vienna, Virginia. They have four children, Jake (16), Hudson (13), Naomi (10), and Matthias (7).
