Bishop Claude Richard Alexander Jr.

Since May of 1981, Claude Alexander has sought to serve God and community. Having accepted the call to ministry at the age of 17, he endeavored to prepare himself by obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Morehouse College (1985), a Master of Divinity Degree from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (1988), and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (2004). Bishop Alexander has served as the Senior Pastor of The Park Church in Charlotte, North Carolina for the past 29 years. Under his leadership, The Park Church has grown from one local congregation of 600 members to a global ministry of thousands with three locations and weekly international reach.

In 2006, the church purchased The Charlotte Merchandise Mart to become The Park Expo and Conference Center, a 529,000 sq. ft multi-faceted destination which houses its third campus that simulcasts and live-streams, hosts office leasing, trade shows, conferences, exhibitions, etc., and serves as the headquarters for The Park International Trade Hub which is dedicated to facilitating trade, commerce, leadership development, social and human development enterprise between the African Diaspora and the African Continent.

A leader among both Christian and civic organizations, he has consistently been listed among the most influential persons in Charlotte, North Carolina. Bishop Alexander has worked with government and community officials to address the community’s most critical issues. Over the years, he has served as a board member of the Urban League of Central Carolinas, United Way, the Arts and Science Council, the N.A.A.C.P. Educational Committee, the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts and Culture, and The Community Building Initiative. Currently, he serves on the boards of Charlotte Center City Partners, Christianity Today, Mission America Coalition, Council for Christian Colleges & Universities, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, and Movement.Org. He is the Chair of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary Board of Trustees and the Second-Presiding Bishop of the Kingdom Association of Covenant Pastors. He is a Past President of the Hampton University Ministers Conference, the oldest and largest interdenominational gathering of African-American clergy in the United States.

In 2013, Bishop Alexander extended his many roles to include that of author. He published his first book, Necessary Christianity, through which he examines the ‘must’ statements of and about Jesus Christ within the Gospels. Written during a three month sabbatical, he strives to challenge notions of personal preference and entitlement in our lives with Christ.

Bishop Alexander is committed to his family above all else. He is married to Dr. Kimberly Nash Alexander and is the proud father of two daughters, Camryn Rene and Carsyn Richelle.

Reflection questions for further engagement:

– How is God teaching you to confront your fears instead of conforming to them?
– What thoughts do you need to take captive and make them obedient to God? What are practical steps to do this?
– In what ways can you actively make God’s word your praise towards Him?
